One of the most basic types of customer service is the call center. A large business will often devote an entire department to taking calls from customers who have needs or concerns about the business’ service or product. The representatives who work at the call center will usually be the first people to hear about the customers’ concerns, and will either resolve the problem or contact the people who can.  Company call centers are the link between customers and the company, and how they handle customer concerns reflects on the company in a very important way.

Another type of service for customers is technical customer service, such as repair people that actually come to the home or those that repair products that are sent back to the company.  Technicians and repair people are often face-to-face representatives of their companies, and their knowledge and efficiency is an important factor when it comes to satisfying the customers and inspiring customer loyalty. 

There are different types of customer service that are provided by businesses.  The type of service that customers encounter will depend on the product or service that a business provides, what the customers’ needs are, and whether the service is problem-oriented or focused toward enhancing the consumer’s experience with the service or product.  Often department stores and specialty stores will have actual customer service stations where customers can go to have problems resolved or receive information that will help them with their shopping needs.  This type of face-to-face customer service is extremely helpful to consumers and has obvious benefits for both the stores and the customers.

We must keep in mind that these people can contribute to a positive or negative manner in the overall revenue.

Taking a closer look, you need to observe if your service advisors roll their eyes, shrug their shoulders, or simply offer non-verbal communication. Do they offer a tired, worn-out expression? A yes answer to any of these questions indicates that your team needs training. They need to recognize and understand that.

Do your service advisors know and understand that basically we see three kinds of customers. You have the first kind – the customer is coming to your business for a specific reason for a specific purchase. They have put their trust in your business and they have decided to try your service.

The customer calling on the telephone to ask questions or to get a price composes the second group. Do your service advisors understand that only a quarter of these people will actually enter your business? This is what makes the telephone conversation so important. Your service advisor must offer the requested information in a pleasant manner. If this call actually gets the customer through your door then there is an 80% chance you will have a new customer.

The last group of customers is those who must be contacted by phone, by the service advisor for whatever reason. This call, although a service call, can also be another way of making another sale. The advisor must learn how to properly make this call – and this requires training.
